Clear browser history before letting your customers use your computer

May 11, 2010

A customer of ours recently asked how to stop her browser from remembering passwords. She wants to give a demo at a trade show, but knows how awkward it will be when a prospect tries to log in to her system, and sees a list of remembered passwords. The prospect will probably not want to continue. So if you’re giving a demo, here are a few steps to disable history and clear out existing history on your browser. The examples are using Firefox but Internet Explorer and Safari will be similar.

  1. From the menu click Tools > Options…
  2. Click on the Privacy tab.
  3. Select “Never Remember History”

    Firefox Browser Privacy

  4. Click on “Clear Browser History”
  5. Click OK on the Clear Browser History Popup

    Firefox Browser Privacy

  6. Click OK on the Options Popup
  7. As always, test out your settings.
    1. Navigate to a website that your browser normally stores the password for (usually bank accounts do not allow storing of passwords, so choose a different site then your bank).
    2. Login
    3. Logout
    4. Navigate back to the website’s home page (this is actually important as passwords are stored by the browser by input field AND by url).
    5. Start typing your login. The browser should not recognize your entry. This means you are good to go and your browser will not remember any passwords.

That’s it. Let us know how it goes!
