Programs that compromise your personal information… or… Spyware 101

Spyware is any program that communicates data about your computer and/or you that you do not explicitly authorize. Imagine that some program is transmitting your behavior and usage patterns on your computer to some individual or company? Well unfortunately, its far more common than you might want to know.

The popular Lexmark printers for example have been notoriously known for installing spyware on buyers’ computers. This spyware sends data on how often and what kind of printer cartridges are loaded into the printer. The communication includes the printer serial number so they know it is you, aka sending unauthorized personal data.

What kind of impact would this compromised personal data have?

If you use a non-Lexmark printer cartridge and your printer fails, they might be able to try and deny you of any warranty on the printer.

This article explains more about the practice of Lexmark printers and how to get rid of this particular spyware program.

Stay tuned for a follow up article on how you can prevent all Spyware from being installed on your computer, even by “trust-worthy” companies.
