Stock options: a donkey and carrot?

Having worked at several startups I found this post *much* needed. Many startups use stock options to attract technical talent at a steep discount. My experience is that you would be better off investing in the lottery then relying on stock options for compensation. Certainly there are many benefits to working at a startup – the general caliber of development talent being high on the list – but I recommend not letting the allure of options to play heavily in your decision. Instead check out the other developer, the projects you’ll be working on, your boss, the leadership, quality of the product, and market reputation.
