Upstream Downstream Clients
Seth Godin writes in his blog today about upstream and downstream thinking. To roughly paraphrase, most of us do our jobs within a fairly narrow range. If a client comes to us, we answer their needs in our office. Godin asks, what if we consider what a client goes through before and after they visit us?
A doctor can consider her work in the box of the examining room. But if she figures out how to get people to quit smoking before they come in, her results are better. If she figures out how to get people to take their meds after they leave, same thing.
If we give more thought to the upstream and downstream processes, then the parameters of our work expands. We can effect a client’s experience from a wider area than just our office.
